6 Types of Fire Extinguishers for Different Fire Classes
Having a fire extinguisher at home is essential, but do you know the different types available? Understanding the six types of fire extinguishers and their respective fire classes can save lives.
- Class A Fires involve common combustible materials such as wood, paper, textiles, straw, and coal.
- Class B Fires originate from flammable liquids like grease, oils (excluding cooking oil), gasoline, diesel, paraffin, paints, tar, alcohol, and ether.
- Class C Fires are caused by flammable gases such as butane, propane, methane, hydrogen, acetylene, and natural gas.
- Class D Fires involve flammable metals like aluminum, lithium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, which require special fire extinguishers due to their potential to cause major industrial accidents.
- Class E Fires usually involve electrical equipment such as computers, printers, electric heaters, and fuse boxes.
- Class F Fires are caused by cooking oils, fats, and grease, commonly found in kitchens.
While multipurpose fire extinguishers can be used for different fire classes, they are labeled with more than one class, such as A-B, B-C, or A-B-C.
At first it may sound confusing, but differentiating between fire extinguisher types is easier than you may think. All three are readily identifiable by their names, colors, and even the hose.
Water Fire Extinguishers
They release pressurized water to cool and quench fires. Ideal for Class A fires, they are simple to maintain and least harmful. Plain red with white writing saying water
Water Mist Fire Extinguishers
Not only compact in size but powerful, these generate ultrapure ‘dry’ water fine particles and combat Class A, B, C and E fires. But, they are not appropriate for Class D and F fires. These leave no residue and so minimize cleanup and collateral damage.
Foam Fire Extinguishers
They are Class A and B fire effective and water-based. The foam works like a blanket over the fire, making re-ignition impossible. Red cylinders marked with “foam” in cream-bordered text Not be sprayed directly into flammable liquids, which could spread the fire."
Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers
Suitable to be used in Class A, B, C, and E fires, as well as some Class D fires with flammable metals. The powder forms a crust that smothers flames but does not penetrate materials well, which means reignition is possible. Why you might not use it: Potential inhalation risks in poorly ventilated areas.
CO2 Fire Extinguishers
These are filled with pressurized CO2 gas, and are residue-free extinguishers that put out fires by driving out oxygen. Suitable for Class B and E fires (i.e., electrical equipment). Having identified themselves with their red body and “CO2” in black bordered text.
Fire Extinguishers for Wet Chemicals
These are for high-temperature fires, like that from deep-fat fryers (Class F). They extinguish the flames and make a soapy solution to ensure re-ignition doesn’t happen. They have a red body with "wet chemical" written in yellow-bordered text.
Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher
No single fire extinguisher can tackle every fire. Understanding your environment and identifying the fire hazards present are the first steps in selecting the right fire extinguisher for your home or building.
